About

A two-year initiative, the Business Commission was created to make the business case for the Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals. Our flagship report, Better Business, Better World, mapped the economic prize for companies that align with the Global Goals, and how to achieve it. The Business Commission formally closed its doors in January 2018. Its legacy lives on through its child initiatives.

The core of our mission is to make a powerful case—supported by sound evidence, rigorous research and compelling real-world examples—for why business leaders should seize upon sustainable development as the greatest opportunity of a lifetime.

Sustainable development presents an enormous opportunity—if business can understand economic, social, and environmental challenges as future value drivers.

As disruptive innovations are breaking new ground and transforming business models in health, education, mobility, agriculture and energy, they are challenging the status quo of industries, from fossil fuels to fashion. But the private sector needs to accelerate inclusive growth and drive sustainability at a far greater speed and scale than it has to date. The Business and Sustainable Development Commission, launched in January 2016, aims to accelerate this market transformation and advance the world’s transition to a more prosperous, sustainable economy.

The core of our mission is to make a powerful case—supported by sound evidence, rigorous research and compelling real-world examples—for why business leaders should seize upon sustainable development as the greatest opportunity of a lifetime. We will show how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide the private sector with a framework for achieving this market shift. The Business Commission’s flagship report, to be published in January 2017, will serve as the foundation from which we will launch a number of activities to inspire and mobilise a growing number of business leaders to align their companies with social and environmental impact.

Our Commissioners bring their diverse expertise to bear on our research and help us to expand our impact and reach. The Business Commission's Steering Committee and Research Advisory Group, which include individuals from the private and public sectors, as well as civil society, are critical to guiding our strategy and shaping our flagship report. We are also grateful for the contributions of supporting organisations, listed below.
